Growth slumps

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa's claims that the Mexican economy will not be dragged down by a faltering US economy look increasingly like wishful thinking. In January, the economy had its weakest growth for three years. Although exports are up, marginally, in the first two months of the year, imports are surging. All this suggests that the Banco de México is more likely to tighten monetary policy than loosen it.
